Construction Site Deliveries – A How-To Guide

Delivering to large, busy construction sites can be a transport company’s biggest challenge. However, with the right research and planning, these deliveries can be perfected over time. At Chadkirk Transport, construction site deliveries are a daily task. Through years of experience, we’ve developed a reliable method to handle them efficiently and safely. Here are the key steps to ensure smooth deliveries. While they may seem simple, you’d be surprised how many fail because of missing these crucial processes.

Pre-Planning

Planning is essential. Make sure any delivery to a construction site is well-researched. This includes:

  • Confirming site contacts and speaking with them before delivery to understand site requirements and processes.
  • Identifying any restrictions in the area and knowing alternative routes.
  • Finding out which entrances to use and understanding the offloading capabilities on-site.

For example, if the site can’t offload and neither can your vehicle, sending a truck with a tail-lift can prevent a failed delivery. Doing this research in advance significantly increases the chances of smooth deliveries and satisfied customers.

Driver Contact

In addition to pre-planning by the traffic team, drivers should stay in touch with their site contact. It’s helpful for the driver to contact them an hour or two before arrival. This allows the site to inform the driver of any last-minute changes and ensure they’re ready for the delivery.

Maintaining contact also helps establish rapport, making the delivery contact more likely to assist. After all, nobody wants a surprise delivery of pallets they weren’t expecting!

The Right Gear

Equipping drivers and vehicles with the necessary gear is a must. Make sure drivers have everything they need to make the delivery as smooth as possible. This includes:

  • A tail-lift
  • Pump-truck
  • Up-to-date satnav
  • Full PPE and high visibility clothing
  • Blind spot and reversing cameras
  • Working turn signals

Having the right equipment ensures safe offloading and reduces the chances of rejected deliveries.

Build Buffer Time into Your Route Planning

Delays are common, especially in busy cities. To account for this, ensure your route planning includes buffer time for potential setbacks. It’s always better to be early than late, as construction sites often have tight schedules (if you’re going to be very early, always plan ahead with the site contact).

Anticipating delays in advance increases the likelihood of successful deliveries.

Offer Real-Time Tracking

Providing real-time GPS tracking helps the site team prepare for the delivery. Since phone signals can sometimes be unreliable, offering an alternative tracking method through an app or webpage via Wi-Fi is a game-changer.

This keeps the site informed and avoids confusion, especially if the phone signal drops.

Conclusion

Successfully navigating construction site deliveries requires careful planning, clear communication, and the right equipment. By following these simple yet effective steps, you can avoid common pitfalls and ensure your deliveries are timely and efficient.

At Chadkirk Transport, we’ve honed our approach over the years to meet the challenges of construction site deliveries head-on. With the right preparation and attention to detail, we help our clients avoid disruptions and keep their projects moving forward smoothly.
